“Success is a journey, not a destination. The doing is often more important than the outcome.” — Arthur Ashe
Holistic Approach for Holistic Struggles
At S.P.H.E.A.R Counseling, we understand the significance of taking a comprehensive approach to your well-being. Whether you're struggling with spiritual health, physical health, emotional/mental health, academic/career concerns, or family/relationship issues, we are here to support you every step of the way.
Spiritual
Spiritual health is not necessarily about religion or even God. It is the connection we foster between us, our higher power, and all other existing things. It provides us with systems of faith, beliefs, values, ethics, principles, and morals. All of which allows us to connect truthfully and entirely. It is how we become “good for something” and not merely “good at something” (Viktor Frankl) Spiritual sickness can be seen as we indulge our physical and mental selves despite being satiated, i.e. constantly looking for food despite being full, seeking a stimulus to overcome boredom, or persistently disconnecting from what's around us. Spiritual sickness can be a key to depression, anxiety, and substance abuse.
PHysical
Many people struggle with physical health problems for various reasons. Physical health and exercise have many psychological and emotional benefits. According to Walden University, exercise can help with depression and anxiety. It can also reduce stress and improve cognitive function and mood. Regular exercise can also boost self-esteem and self-confidence by improving endurance, losing weight, and increasing muscle tone.
Emotional / Mental
People with poor mental health often have a low quality of life. Their mental health issues make it difficult for them to do everyday tasks, which can lead to a loss of independence. They also struggle with low self-confidence and self-esteem. Emotional and mental distress affects every aspect of their life. Acceptance of uncomfortable thoughts and emotions can be freeing. Learning to cope and manage with them can bring a sense of freedom and transform their life.
Academic / Career
Mental, emotional, and behavioral health problems get in the way of career and academic aspirations. These issues can make it hard to have energy, focus, be reliable, think clearly, and stay positive, which can hurt how well you do. Studies show that depression and anxiety have significant impacts on academic and career success.
Relationships - Family / Peer
Relationships are a significant part of our lives. How we connect and interact with partners, children, family, friends, and others can greatly influence our overall well-being. Several factors affect our relationships, such as having unclear and unrealistic expectations, treating others as objects, struggling to set boundaries, being self-centered, lacking self-confidence, having difficulty resolving conflicts, and dealing with traumatic experiences. Through therapy, individuals can learn to take responsibility for their actions in relationships instead of blaming others and self-victimizing. It is important to recognize the humanity in others and work on self-improvement to improve strained relationships.
“If we learn to open our hearts, anyone, including the people who drive us crazy, can be our teacher.” — Pema Chödrön
